Okay ladies, the buzz has been crazy over ‘Magic Mike,’ so now that it is finally debuting in the theaters, I want to know if you think it lived up to all the hype?  It’s doubtful I will see it (I think I just heard a collective gasps from all the women out there), but I do want to know what you all think about it.  So please let me know if ‘Magic Mike’ is indeed magical?  Who knows, you may influence me to see it at my husband’s dismay.  He calls it the male version of ‘Showgirls.’ Ha, ha!  Yet I believe he saw ‘Showgirls.’  Okay people, please let me know what you think of ‘Magic Mike!’

I will give a recap tonight when I get home :)

The movie was surprisingly big on plot. Yes, yes there were scenes where there were men stripping and crazy women stuffing money into their g-strings, but the actual meat and potatoes of the movie dealt with an actual plot LOL. A friend of mine said there was more plot than she was hoping for.

It’s not unintentionally hilarious like Showgirls was. Magic Mike doesn’t take itself seriously at times and when the mood shifted, it was done really well. I went to the last showing of the movie and the theater was filled to capacity, the earlier showings had all been sold out. The women in the theater laughed, hooted and then were completely silent when everything got serious.

Matthew M’s character is so completely what I imagine him to be in real life LOL sort of hippy, out there, loveable but yet a business man at the heart. The real standout is Channing Tatum, his part isn’t stripper with a heart of gold. Yeah he works 4 jobs as he tries to make money to start his business, and stripping is just another way to get the cash in so he can make furniture full time. You really don’t realize how difficult it is to get a small business loan when you have no credit history (all of his jobs deal in cash – roofer, has a mobile car detailing business, stripping and his custom furniture business).

No one is going to win any oscars here, but the acting was pretty good, the dialogue felt real and not scripted – people talked over each other, it was fast paced there were goofs where I was’t sure if it was scripted or not, but it made the dialogue richer.

It’s a fun night out movie. There is one scene where a male enhancement pump is used, but it’s done as a sight gag and is hilarious (and it’s done off to the side so it’s not centered on your attention). The supporting cast was good (and good-looking), Kevin Nash as “Tarzan” was a fun surprise. If you’ve been to a chippendales type club you’ll enjoy the scenes here because it’s very similar to what happens in them. The behind the scenes stuff was interesting as well.

I don’t think it’s strictly a “chick-flick”, if guys go to see it, I think they’d be just as entertained. The romance, was minimal, there was some flirting back and forth, but no huge declarations and no one was completely swept off their feet. The dance scenes were spaced out so don’t go in thinking you’ll see a lot of them.

Now for the warnings – there is of course alcohol drinking – it takes place in a club. There is drug use. There is nudity (mostly booty, but there are boobs as well and that off too the side shot of the pump and the member inside it – which is in shadow). No love scenes (there’s enough of that on stage).

In closing, I recommend it (8 out of 10 for me).
