‘One Million Moms’ You Offend Me & I’m A Christian Mom! #StandUpForEllen By: Michelle Rivera

I am a Christian, a Catholic to be exact.  I am also a mom, living within a “traditional” family with a husband and a child.  Therefore, you may categorize me as a “Christian mom.”  My husband’s side of the family is Lutheran and his father is a Lutheran Minister and so you may also categorize his side of the family as Christian too.  So since I am a Christian mom, you may wonder why the “Christian” based mom group ‘One Million Moms’ has offended me  deeply.

OneMillionMoms.com is a Christian group, which is a Project of The American Family Association and they have recently made headlines with their campaign to try and stop Ellen Degeneres from being JC Penney’s new spokesperson because she is gay.  On their website One Million Moms’ states the following:

“Recently JC Penney announced that comedian Ellen Degeneres will be the company’s new spokesperson. Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.”

Well I have a lot to say about this statement that is on the ‘One Million Moms’ website.  The first thing is this, ‘One Million Moms’ you offend me!  Please don’t speak for me as a Christian mom who has a “traditional” family, because I absolutely 200% applaud JC Penney for making Ellen Degeneres their spokesperson.  As a Christian myself, I am so sick and tired of “Christians” like you, using “Christianity” as a way to practice and spew hatred and intolerance towards people.  You’re giving the rest of us a bad name.

I am a long-time shopper of JC Penney who also happens to fall into your Christian based “traditional family,” as you call it.  Therefore, I am the person you say will be offended and stop shopping at JC Penney simply because they now have an “open homosexual” as their spokesperson.  However, all these things that you say is the furthest thing from the truth.  THIS Christian mom (me) plans to continue shopping at JC Penney as I have done now for years, and I absolutely can’t wait to see what fun commercials Ellen Degeneres will be doing for them as their spokesperson.  I already love her in the Cover Girl ads, which you ‘One Million Moms’ must not wear because I didn’t hear anything about you starting a boycott campaign against them.

Further more, how does replacing Ellen Degeneres show that JC Penney is deciding to be neutral in the “culture war” as you put it?  If they gave into your demands how does that show neutrality to the millions of supporters and fans of Ellen, like myself, who do watch her show and have also been shopping at JC Penney for years?  If JC Penney was to give into your demands by dumping Ellen then all that would simply mean is that they are now taking your side instead.  This is NOT neutrality, this is hypocrisy!  Your whole statement is ignorant and preposterous, as well as presumptuous in thinking that you are truly speaking for Christian moms.  You’re NOT.

Some “Christians” like you, like to say how the Bible says homosexuality is a sin and so you think you can get away with trying to oppress homosexuals.  ”Christians” like you, like to quote Leviticus 18:22 as an argument against homosexuality.  However, it is a known fact that Jesus Himself never even spoke once about homosexuality in the Bible and yet Christianity is suppose to be based on Jesus Christ’s teachings.  Also, you same “Christians” don’t condemn other sins to the level that you like to condemn homosexuality.  However, there are several sins in which the Bible says is cause for stoning and execution, such as not being a virgin when you are married, which is in Deuteronomy 22:13-21.  Will you now also be asking unmarried people to prove that they are still virgins before they can obtain a job, such as being a spokesperson for a popular brand?  I’m sure you ‘One Million Moms’ were all virgins when you were married too, right?  And what about your husbands?  If not, looks like some of you are going to go straight to hell and probably shouldn’t be representing this organization.  Now tell me, how absurd does that sound?  Do you see my point  ’One Million Moms?’  My guess is you probably don’t.

I would like to see more Christians practice this part of the Bible which says, “Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself.” People need to stop living so self righteously as though they are free of sins and above other human beings.  Gays are entitled to the same rights, respect, and privileges as everyone else put on this Earth by God.

The last time I checked Ellen Degeneres promotes many “Traditional” values in which people are always talking about, but not truly demonstrating in real life, such as she does.  Ellen promotes kindness towards others, respect, truth, love, and yes she even promotes marriage.  She is a true humanitarian who brings joy into people’s lives through laughter.  If that doesn’t promote good family values, then I don’t know what does.

Another issue that Ellen is against is bullying and  to me ‘One Million Moms’ that’s just what you are, ‘One Million Bullies.’  You’re just trying to bully your views and put them upon other people, even when it is uncalled for with good people such as Ellen Degeneres.

Thank you JC Penney for not giving into the bullying of ‘One Million Moms’ and for keeping a treasure like Ellen Degeneres as your Spokesperson.  Also Ellen, as a personal note to you please know that there are Christian moms who support you and appreciate the goodness you bring into this world.

Well said. If anything, their call for a boycott makes me want to shop at JC Penny more now :)

  2. Itzel Yagual says:

Well put! I love Ellen and it is her choice to be who she wants to be…

  3. alicia says:

Wow Michelle! Well said! This is everything I thought and wanted to shout from the rooftops. ‘One Million Moms’ uses their religion and their “rights of children” bull, to spread hate and bully anyone who is different. I am a Christian, happily engaged to a man and I am a Child & Youth Worker, I am horrified to think that this group is supposed to be about protecting the innocent, when all they do is spread the hate and bigotry that generations have tried to erase. Their website has one big trend… Trying to opposed homosexuals, last time I checked, judgement is NOT a quality that Jesus taught! ‘One Million Moms’ has an even bigger uphill battle now, you don’t mess with Ellen fans!

  4. Well said! I think the Million Moms’ intentions have completely backfired – so many more people are shopping at and supporting JC Penney now that probably ever would have before. I support the company for standing by Ellen and for not caving in to the bullies.

  5. I agree with you 200% as well and you said it so well. It´s important to stand up for what we believe in when other people say they are representing us. No, our voices are loud and will be heard…we just need to use them.

  6. Donna says:

Well said, Michelle! Proud to have participated in the shop-in with you!

  7. Mark says:

Nice article Michelle. Statements from groups like these really should be considered hate speech. It’s groups like these that are pushing people away from religion altogether. But that may be their plan–to push out anyone that doesn’t share their same conservative views. We can take some solace in the fact that there is no chance that they have even close to 1 million members. I would be surprised if they numbered in the thousands. God bless America . . . even those mis-guided moms.

    • Thank you so much Mark. It is hate speech and it does push some people away from Christianity and that is unfortunate. 1 Million Moms is more like 44,000 Moms, but even this many moms is too many for the discrimination in which they are preaching. Thanks for the comment on M2H. :)

  8. Yolanda says:

Fabulous article… I applaud JC Penney for sticking by their guns and cannot wait to see Ellen in their commercials.

    • Thanks Yolanda I appreciate it! I look forward to seeing the commercials too. I think One Million Moms actually gave JC Penney more business rather than deter it. Their hate has back-fired.

  9. Caryn B says:

I completely support JCP for not wavering to pressure….

  10. celina says:

    Love it!!

  11. Vanessa says:

I commend you! Stand up for ellen!

  12. AnnMaria says:

I couldn’t agree more! I am a married, practicing Catholic, mother of four daughters all of whom I sent to Catholic schools. As one of my daughters says, “My mom is Latin Catholic — they’re the worst kind because they don’t just go to church and give $20 a week. They MEAN it.”

I attended Catholic school as a child and was required to read the entire Bible every year as part of religion class. I don’t recall anything where God hates homosexuals. I *DO* remember a lot about loving thy neighbor, feeding the hungry, and God being a just God. I don’t recall God being obsessed with people’s sex lives.

I am SICK of people like Santorum or these so-called million moms saying they speak for me. I am SICK of people saying Latinos are “socially conservative” whatever that is supposed to mean.

    • Way to go AnnMaria, love your comment-thank you! I too attended Catholic school when I was younger and never once heard, “Thou shall hate homosexuals.” Groups like One Million Moms is absurd and they certainly don’t speak for the rest of us.

  13. So happy to hear a Christian point of view that I can agree with. As for me and my family, we honor ALL paths to God including Christianity. We even honor all people who don’t believe in religious practices but who are centered in love and integrity. I am so grateful that JC Penney took this stand. I haven’t shopped there in a long time, but I plan to do so as we need things for our new home. Well said my dear. I KNEW I liked you right away for a reason.;-) xoxo sk

    • Thank you Susan, you’re so kind. I am so grateful that JC Penney took this stand too. It’s time that we start respecting people based on their character and not based on things such as religion, sex, race, or sexual orientation. Thank you so much for leaving a comment.

First I hope you don’t mind the silly name I used for myself here as I love to joke around. I myself am not a Christian but I do believe and practice kindness and tolerance as Jesus preached. I love your post. I always believed that when people practice intolerance or hate it actually pulls them away from God instead of towards God. I just hope none of their children turn out to be gay because in families where gay children are not accepted there is a greater likeliness of drug abuse or suicide attempts. You represent Christianity the way Jesus intended it. Hopefully members of that intolerant group will read your post and think maybe they have it all wrong.

  16. Nay says:

Are you out of your living mind? Christian means to be Christ like. You can not love the things that God hates. You will stand before Him nad give an account for what you believe which is erroneous and against His word. Repent!

    • Repent Nay for you are a bigot who hates people who are not like you! Jesus’ teachings were of love and acceptance, something you obviously DO NOT practice!!! I stand before Jesus everyday and he has given me a blessed life. I feel sorry for your ignorance, but no matter what I know Jesus loves you, as he loves every man and woman he has put on this Earth.

  17. Ava says:

Michelle what a well written excellent article!
Thanks for standing up to one million bullies:)!
